How do I cure my horse's slight barn sourness?

I've had my 11 year old paint gelding for 2 and a half years now. He's in perfect health and in shape. I trail ride alot (bareback) and also practice english equitation at the barn I board him at. We live in Alaska so he's kept in a stall with a small run in the winter time and out at pasture when the grass starts growing again. He's let out to play and run around regularly and his stall is always clean. I do only grain him in his stall usually, sometimes before we ride and sometimes after. When we're leaving the barn he drags his feet and moves at snail pace. I have to keep nagging at him to pick up the pace and it's very tiring and he only half listens to me. As soon as we head back to the barn he speedwalks and gets frisky and I have to hold him back instead of bug him to move forward. I want to know what I can do to make it so he's speedy and frisky thoughout the whole trailride and not just the ride back home. I like having a hyper horse it's more fun!
